Garnishment while consolidation pending?

Just received notice in the mail that my wages will be garnished in a month for Stafford loans in default. I just finished the online application to have the loans consolidated. I know this will take 60 days at least to process, so what can I do to stop the garnishment from starting? Really want to avoid the embarassment of it at work. Do I request a hearing? I think I would certainly qualify for financial hardship a garnishment would cause...but will that even hold the garnishment off long enough for the consolidation to be processed?
Thanks in advance.
I guess while I am asking, I have another question...actually more of a request for reassurance...once the consolidation is processed I can go ack to school correct? I have really been wanting to but this whole fiasco has kept me away.

It's the 30 day notice of appeal. Here's the strange thing...letter is dated 6/14/10, post marked 6/21/10 and it says this:
HOW TO REQUEST A HEARING:
Complete the enclosed form and return it to the Commission by 6-30-10. If the Commission does not receive your hearing request before 03-13-10, it will be considered late and, while your request for hearing will be processes, a Withholding Order will be sent to your employer."
Yes, it says 03-13-10, like March?? Is this a typo? Because the letter is dated 6-14-10, it makes me think it should say 7-13-10...
It also says a couple paragraphs down:
The Commission must receive your request for a hearing by 06-30-10 in order to prevent a Withholding Order from being sent to your employer.
So I obviously need to get this form in the mail TODAY for my employer to not be notified...but what happens after the hearing in my Consolidation loan is still being processed?

Well I finished the paperwork for the hearing anyways and I just need to make a copy of my lease tomorrow morning and then I will be running to the post office to send this Express mail to insure they have it by 6-30-10... which I am still confused by the date because I thought I had 30 days! Hopefully I am doing the right thing and this won't mess up the consolidation loan that is pending....

Thanks - the dates on it are so messed up.

It also says:
"The commission must receive your witten request for a hearing by 06-30-10 in order to prevent a Withholding Order from being sent to your employer."

Excuse my french, but WT*! They purposely make it confusing, which date is it?? So needless to say, I rushed to the post office today and paid $20 to ship it Express mail to gurantee they will have it tomorrow, can't take the chance of jeopardizing the Consolidation from going through. I think I sent a pretty detailed packet...I sent 6 months of bills and a spreadsheet averaging the monthly payments out. After everything is paid I am left with less than $200 for the month and I suggested a payment of $120. I also sent a cover letter explaining why I am in such a tough financial situation (65%) pay cut last year. Do most people send a written letter as well? What has been everone's outcome with the hearings? Just curious if I have a fighting chance or not.
