What to do if a Debt Collector Violates the FDCPA Act

debt collectors are required to follow the rules laid down in the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. If you find any such debt collector violating the law, you can take the following action:

  • You should keep a detailed record of the communication held between you and the debt collector. You should include date, time, and the name of the person who has called you.

  • It is necessary to keep a copy of all the written correspondence between you and the debt collector.
Report the company in writing. The report should be sent to:

Federal Trade Commission
Correspondence Branch
600 Pennsylvania, NW
Washington, D.C. 20580

Call their toll-free number, 1-800-HELPFLA (1-800-435-7352)

Academy Collections guys are a peice of work. they call me at work...so i tell them very politely i can not recieve calls here...well...taht went over like a mosh pit at a funeral. i have told them repeatedly now (and have them on record a call) that they are harassing me and to cease these calls at work. the nasty little operators remarks are almost all the same "no it is not harrassment" i even asked for their address so i could send a cease communications letter and she refused it because i wouldn't give them my cell number! i had to look it up on the internet! Academy Collections' people are the lowest form of bottom feeders.

Swampmojo - You can send a cease and desist letter at the following address through certified mail with return receipt requested.

Academy Collection Service, Inc.
10965 Decatur Road
Philadelphia, PA 19154

Local: (215) 281-7500
Toll Free: (800) 220-0605

After they receive your letter, they are required to stop all collection efforts otherwise it will be a violation of the fdcpa law.
