Buying Practices of Collection Agencies from another

I recently received a letter fr a collection agency stating that I owe them $ 10000 for a credit card I had failed to pay due to financial hardship. As I called the agency, they had mentioned another account # on their file. I had questioned this and asked them why the acct# inidcated on the letter is diff. from what their verbally informing me about. How will I be sure that I'm paying for my debt when its a different acct#?

I did call the CA again and they said that since they had bought the account from another CA, the account# is an alternate acct#.Its very similar to the original credit card# to the one I originally had but the last 8#s verbally mentioned is not the same however, this CA is telling me that its the same account. I asked them to provide documentation stating all their BS if its on their file but they are giving me a runabout way and saying that they dont have the original file with them and they need to get that info from the original creditor which would take some time and I would be charged for it. Is that legal? What course of action should I take?

How can I positively know that this account would not be resold to another CA since the acct# written on their file is not the original acct#? I will check on my credit report and find out but what if I'm right? Would it be best for me to just eventually pay off and close the account to provide the credit bureaus to investigate it? How will I go about providing them reason to check it out?
