Dispute the debt info given by the collection agency. You may also try contacting the original creditor for the details of the account. If they are accepting payments on your account, you won't need to pay anything to the CA.

I did call the CA again and they said that since they had bought the account from another CA, the account# is an alternate acct#.Its very similar to the original credit card# to the one I originally had but the last 8#s verbally mentioned is not the same however, this CA is telling me that its the same account. I asked them to provide documentation stating all their BS if its on their file but they are giving me a runabout way and saying that they dont have the original file with them and they need to get that info from the original creditor which would take some time and I would be charged for it. Is that legal? What course of action should I take?

You don't have to pay a charge after the debt is disputed with the company. This is just crap. See the account if it's reported in your credit report. You may ask the credit bureau to investigate after providing them reasons.

How can I positively know that this account would not be resold to another CA since the acct# written on their file is not the original acct#? I will check on my credit report and find out but what if I'm right? Would it be best for me to just eventually pay off and close the account to provide the credit bureaus to investigate it? How will I go about providing them reason to check it out?

You know your account is disputed. Still, if you want to pay, go ahead but there is no surety that the company will post your payment to your account because it is shown wrong. If this doesn't happen, it will give you new cause of worries and start new series of investigation.

Checked up on person indicated on the letter they had initially sent me and to my surprise, there is nobody there by that collectors name. You're right about me disputing the account. Will keep you posted on this. Thanks.
