1099-C issued for Cancellation of Debt
My Mother-in-Law just received a 1099-C form (Cancellation of Debt) Creditor: Asset Acceptance, LLC/Local Bank in Illinios.
Problem is: 1099-C form does not have correct SS#, and was originally issued from a Bank that is long gone in our area, (bank dissipated its accounts way back in 2004/2005), also the account/loan # that was on form, does not match any check/savings/loan that my Mother-in-Law has ever held? The only thing that is correct is her current address!
I'm just wondering what scam this company is up to, and what if anything can be done about it? Should I contact IRS, or another Gov. agency about this matter, or should I file this in the circular file cabinet and tell her to forget about it?

Don't get rid of it as it could be used as evidence later on. I
Don't get rid of it as it could be used as evidence later on. I haven't read up on these 1099-c forms yet but I am going to look into that.
My guess is contact the IRS or the person who does your taxes. It is bogus and is a new tactic from what I hear but people are fighting them.
