I still have more time to use deferments, when I spoke to Citi last year, I was told I was still eligible for several years.
Are they legally entitled to do this? Do I have room to negotiate with them?
I haven't defaulted on my loans and we've paid the amount that was delinquent.

Private loans have very limited deferments. Some lenders require that you stay enrolled in school... that means no time off....taking the semester off may have put your loan into repayment. With some loans you cannot change schools. Read your prom note.....legally you may have agreed to these terms.

Hi Garrett- I have a bunch of private loans from when I was in school, and my husband has them now since he has gone back to school and we've both dealt with the deferrment nonsense, so I feel your pain. Are you back in school now? If you are, have the registrar's office complete a certificate of enrollment status and send it to Citi. If you're not back in school, you may not be able to get the in-school deferrment. However, you can typically apply for forbearance. Some private lenders allow you to do this as a matter of course, and some private lenders (like mine!) are a little more difficult. What I ended up having to do with Chase was tell them that unless they wanted to force me to default on the loans, they would have to give me temporary hardship forbearance. They required myself and my cosigner to fill out some forms and make a statement that we were unable to pay at that time, etc. Hope this helps!
