Defaulted student loan
Since I've been unemployed and nearly lost everything, including my house, I've decided to go back to school and obtain a degree in Education. After I applied for Federal Financial Aid, I was told that there was a defaulted student loan on my record. But, I paid my student loans years ago. Also, I was told to reconcile it that I had to contact the school I attended years ago.
Since January of this year, I've sent a letter, a registered follow up letter. I've sent an email and a fax. But, still, the college does not reply to my letter. They need to either validate the student loan or send me a closed letter. Also, the NSLDS, this agency overseas student loans, does not have any record of the student loan on file for me.
Do you have any suggestions for me to resolve this issue?
Thanks for your help,
Rob K

have you called the school. They dont HAVE to validate it or send you a closed letter....nothing in the law that says that. I would call them and tell them what FFASA said...and if there is nothing there, get in touch with FFASA.

Yep, I called, faxed, emailed, sent a letter normal mail and sent a registered letter. No one ever replies to my request. Thanks for your insight.

You called....ask for the Director of Fianancial Aid....tell them you want an answer. They have computers on their desks...if something is outstanding it will show up on their system.

Hello,
I defaulted on my student loans, but in the last 2 years I have been repaying my loans; however the repayment comes through wage garnishment. I am eligible for more federal aid since I am repaying my loans?

No you are not in repayment...you are in garnishment. Only way to get aid now is to rehab your account which requires 9 on time payments over and above your garnishment...you regain financial aid eligiblity after the 6th payment and after the 9th you will rehab. Failure to meet the rehab during months 7 - rehab funding would mean your aid would be pull back immediately.
