Defaulted Student Loan

What is the first step to begin repayment on defaulted student loans? My federal tax return was intercepted due to my default and I was planning to use that to begin payment. Now I am unsure how much I owe or who I should contact to find out the remaining balance. Thank you.

The letter from your taxes gave you the name and phone of the agency (guarantor) offsetting your taxes. Are you getting letters from anyone? Or call 1800-4FEDAID. More than likely you will be directed to a collection agency to start making your payments.

Did a new rule go into affect July 1, 2010 requiring that the first student loan holder remove the negative entries from your credit report after rehabilitation is complete. The guarantor who I did the rehab with has indicated that they are going to remove the negatives, and they also told me that the prior loan holder has to as well, according to fed law effective 7/1, but when I called the prior loan holder they indicated that they would not remove.
