Hello, I have recently sent one of my creditors a letter asking for verifications of the debt, they finally responded with a letter asking me to verify my identity to them, asking for DL, SS#, Address, and a mail reciept to prove my address. Of course I am not going to send them this but does this show that they cannot verify the debt? If so, do you have any idea on how my next letter should sound? Or do you have any generic template which I can use? Also do they have any legal rights to be even ask me to verify myself? This was actually a student load over 20 years ago and the amount is something that I believe is not the right amount, I remember when I took out my student loan from Sallie Mae that it was only about 5k, the amount they are asking for was over 20k plus it was from a company called ERS. I am not even sure this is a real company. Anyways any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much.

Federal loan?? You can easily verify it yourself at NSLDS.gov. Your verifiication letter to them must have been very generic and they are within their rights to request SS#, and address.

Do not mess around with student loans, they can garnish you without a court order in all 50 states. And yes, with interest and capitalized interest plus collection fees of up to 25%, $5000 can blow up to 20k and more very quickly. Plus no SOL
