Allied Interstate How to Proceed?
I have read the other posts concerning defaulted Federal Student Loans being sent a Collection Agency, but need some more concrete advice on how to solve the problem.
I defaulted on my two federal student loans and they were sent to a collection agency (Allied Interstate). I have not lived in the US since 2001, and currently live in Sweden. After being unemployed for some time, I finally found a job and contacted the Department of Education today only to find out they had referred the debts to collection. I don??t dispute any of the debts and I want to rectify this matter immediately.
I immediately called Allied Interstate this morning, but was given another number to an office in Ohio. I called that number, left a message and am waiting for a call back.
Question: How should I proceed in dealing with them? I understand my position and want nothing more than to get this debt back on the right track. I just don??t want to get snowballed into anything without knowing the facts. Should I agree to make a good faith payment (say 10%) and then try the rehabilitation route?
Also should I wait for the representative to call me back, or should I keep trying?
Thanks for your help

It is only 9 am now in Ohio...collectors for the Department of Education work various shifts to cover the different time zones in the US. The collector may not start work until the early afternoon and work into the evening hours...so be patient a bit.
Most of Allied DoE collections are done in Minnesota, so you might be forwarded back there.
No down payment is required for a rehab. However, you may not qualify for a rehab in that you are out of the country. I know in the past consolidations could only be done with a US address.
