All of you who work for or have worked for this bunch...you need to drop your snotty A$$ messages...you have some of the snottiest reps I have ever heard...and you leave a message saying that "your call is ONLY FOR so-and-so and to hang up if you are not so-and-so!" Seriously????? Are you kidding? Good luck trying to get that money. I will continue to pay when I can, to the hospital, and I will probably even pay off the full amount of the bill...which I don't even owe now.
Yeah, I really do not like collection agencies, even tho I have NEVER had to deal with one until I am retired, unable to work or even find a job, yet they are trying to get blood from this old turnip! Does it really give them pleasure making people feel guilty because they don't HAVE the money to pay them off completely? Go ahead...take me to court....and who do you think they will feel for? (Well, in this day and age, it will no doubt be a Repugnant judge and he will be on the corporation's side.)
I sympathize with your situation but you have a couple of flaws
I sympathize with your situation but you have a couple of flaws in your theory which might land you in hot water.
1. No point making payments to the hospital if the account has been turned over to collections. You can either call the hospital and arrange for a payment plan in which case you will be dealing with the hospital directly. In the second case, you get the debt validated and upon receiving proper proof that the CA has the right to collect the debt, set up a payment plan with them.
2. Even if the judge was a sympathetic man, you wouldn't be granted a margin since the law is the law (and its pretty cold and heartless) and the debt is a debt which deserves to be repaid. Unless you have had the debt discharged through bankruptcy, the CA will win a judgment against you.
I know I have had to deal with my fair share of harassment at the hands of collectors and I sincerely implore you to talk to the hospital first, find out all the details regarding your account and then make any further payments.

It has been my understanding that if I have been making payments on a debt, and I am not denying that I have a hospital bill I have been making payments on, that they could not turn that over to a collection agency...(since I have made payments on that bill.) |
You assumption is wrong. Hospital bills are due in full at time of service. They can send you to collections and sue you at any time.

The hospital simply sends your payment to the collection agency or credits them with a pay direct. What you are not understanding is the collection agency is hired under contract. The hospital cannot negotiate with you and all payments received are credited to the collection agency. Individuals you try to circumvent the system and who will not talk to the CA and usually the first in line to be sued.
