Receiving collection letter in US for child benefits received in Sweden.
I was living in Sweden in 2008 and we had baby born there,My wife received child benefit from local government for maternity leave. We left Sweden in Oct,2008 and moved to USA. I had informed their social security at that time. They paid in error for 2 extra months even when we left the country. Now(Sep,2012) I am receiving a collection letter from US collection agency stating that I was paid more in benefits and I need to pay back, also the amount seems much higher ($15K USD) than I think I would have gotten extra(should be around 3-4K USD). Can they do this after so much of time has passed and if I don't pay can this affect me in anyway or my credit report, I willing to pay the correct amount which we would have gotten extra, how should I approach collection agency for this, validation letter, phone, email?
