My friend just received a notice of a complaint filed by Midland for unpaid credit card debt. If we contact Midland directly, will they be likely to negotiate a reduced payment if we agree to pay in a lump sum? In exchange, we would want them to withdraw the lawsuit in writing, etc.

Huh?? They "may" agree to withdraw the case?? If the debt is settled, there is nothing to sue on so of course the case is withdrawn.
