I am wanting some advise here, i sent the DV letter, got the confirmation yesterday. As for my next step once they verify the debt, Can I try to settle through letter or would it be best to call. this company has a bad rap for being very rude.

sorry, but i missed the original thread.you should have asked for validation as all they would have to do is send a letter stating you owe the debt to verify.validation is more thorough.see what is sent and then send a debt validation letter shortky thereafter.who is the collector?

It hasnt been that long...if they are going to respond it sometimes takes time to pull the information you requested. Or they may have chosen to ignore it and close the account and return it to the creditor which is their choice.

If they do respond, settlement offers should be done over the phone...they will not negotiate thru the mail.

Soap is correct. Negotiating a settlement via a letter is not a reliable way to negotiate. The art of negotiation is dependent on emotional and psychological scenarios that are impossible to leverage through writing.

The key to negotiating is presenting your offer in a "what if" context.

"What if I could borrow the money to generate 30% of what I owe? I'm not sure that I can, but if you advise me that you will accept it, I'll make some phone calls to try and find it..."

This approach will serve you much better.
