credit card interest reduction

My longtime girlfriend has a us airways mastercard it was originally at 10.50 percent interest. She had setup an autopay with them and it was magically botched on their end according to our bank. And that this was somewhat common. However the net result was she was 4 days late on payment and suddenly was given the default interest rate of 29.99 percent. I don't know about most people but i consider this usery. How do we approach mastercard considering they will not budge on this issue?

I believe if we are thinking of the same US airways card, it would be Barclay's. If you register to the site I can send you a phone number for the retentions department of the specific company.
