Credit is damaged from default student loans, how to repair

I went default on my student loans in 1999. I was not employed at that time. But no one called me and nobody tried to collect the debt after that. My report never showed this account. Suddenly when I pulled a copy from TU last week, I saw this account appearing there and my score is down by 40 points. How can I get it improved? I wish to buy a car and need a loan. Lenders are not ready to offer me low rates unless my score is reasonably high. Please suggest.

Probably your account is under collection now. Negotiate with collection people and ask after how many successive on-time payments will they report it as Rehabilitated.

Or you can consolidate your loan. It could help you to repay the loan with easy installments per month and the rate if interest is supposed to be reduced.

Also browse this forum to collect some idea about what you should do right now. Go through this post to have some knowledge on how to remove default student loan accounts from credit report-
