Received Summon: Please advise.
I live in CA. I received a summons in the mail today that was filed in late Oct 2006 by legal dept of collection agency. Is this a proper way to serve someone? It says on the summons I have 30 days to respond after the summons and legal papers have been served. I am confused. Have I been officially served? If so, is the 30 days to file a response from the date I received the summons. How would the court know when I received the summons? I just want to be sure of how much time I have.
A friend told me that they are just mailing me the summons and will officially serve me later. Could this be it? What if I don't hear anything from the collection agency again? Do I assume that the date I was serve is today..so I have 30 days to respond?
Thank you for any help. Everyone seems very knowledgeable and friendly on this site. I am so happy I found this site.

Never never never never never ignore a summons. If you think it
Never never never never never ignore a summons. If you think it was not properly served (it sounds like it wasn't), argue that to a court. If you let it go, you may (most likely will) be very sorry down the road.
