Portfolio Recovery on credit report as well as original debt
Date: Tue, 05/01/2007 - 19:45
When I looked at a copy of a recent credit report I noticed that they had reported my debt that they purchased from a credit card company, while that same credit card debt is also still on my report, thus showing up 2 times. It looks like I have more debt than I do and this is unfair. I was wondering if this is legal and or what I can do about it. This company chewed me a new one after I asked if I could reduce my payments or request a temperary freeze during a hard time. They told me the only option was to close the account and they hung up on me. After wards I continued to receive letters requesting payment and now they reported the debt.

Dispute the item with the credit bureau and request them to verify it with the data furnishers. Two different items for the same amount should not show in your credit report. If the collection agency has purchased the debt, the original creditor has to mark a zero balance.
