Defaulted on Loan - Question
Since I wrote this post, I have written a goodwill letter to Citibank and am hoping that it does something. Just wonder if anyone has had something similar happen or know if i can do anything more?

Well, who were you paying??? That money has to be going somewhere! Find out where your payments have been going asap.

I guess I didnt clarify.....I was paying the DOE but I didnt realize that the consolidated loan wasnt part of that. I basically was under the impression that I consolidated all of them, was getting the DOE bills and paying them........but come to find out there was teh consilidated loan through Ed Funds/Citibank that I never once touched (never recieved any contact at all so I didnt even know my error until I recently went to apply for aid)
I was careless and naive - I know this but am now trying to make good and do what I can to do some damage control. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks for responding.

Ok....who did you attempt to consolidate thru? Citibank or DOE? When you apply for consolidation, you should have listed all of your loans....the consolidating lender wont necessarily go looking for them. When you started to getting billings, did you not notice that the totals were off?
Damage control. Nothing you can do now on the Citibank negative tradelines. Student loans by law are required to report accurately. You now have to deal with the Edfund negative tradeline. Your options are
A...Rehab or B. Consolidate the whole mess again. Rehabbing will require that you make 9 on time monthly payments and then the loan will come out of default. Edfunds tradeline will be changed to current. Then once you have completed the rehab, then consolidate and whole mess with one lender. Option B...if you choose this option, the Edfund negative tradeline will remain.
With either option, you are now stuck with an additional collection charge...not sure what Edfund is charging now but it is around 20%.
You probably should become familiar with this site... http://www.nslds.ed.gov/nslds_SA/ This is the national database and it will list out all information on your current loans.
Any other questions, shout!!
Thanks so much for your response. OK, to answer your Q's....
Thanks so much for your response.
OK, to answer your Q's....No, I didnt realize the balances were off on my DOE bills. I just knew that I tried to consolidate my loans through Ed Fund and started to get DOE bills....and never got Ed Fund bills....so I assumed I was paying them all. (i had been in deferrment since I was in school)
Once i found out I did default on the Ed Fund/Citibank Loan, I immediately called the DOE and entered into that Rehab program. I never would have defaulted on this if I wasnt stupid enough to not realize I wasnt paying it. Will the Citibank negative stay on my credit report even after I complete the rehab program?
Also, since they never once sent me anything or called me - can I do anything?

Something is not right. Edfund and the DOE are not one and the same. Edfund is the FFELP lender for the state of California.....DOE is the Feds. You need to log into NSLDS on the link above and figure out who is holding which loans. Edfund does not send bills....as a guarantor they send demand notices. Had you moved at some point and not notified parties of a change of address?
Student loans are considered self serving....you are responsible to pay even if you didnt receive a bill. I really think you need to sit down and figure out A...how much you owe and B. to whom.
Thanks for the response. I know now what I owe and to whom but
Thanks for the response.
I know now what I owe and to whom but at the time I was obviously stupid and because I (mistakenly) was under the impression I consolidated all of my loans with the this Ed Fund/Citibank, and because I was getting the DOE bills I just assumed that was what I owed in total. Never once recieved a demand notice or a single call from Ed funds or Citibank so I didnt ever question it. I realize how ignorant/naive this...but at this point it is what it is.....and I can only own up to it.
When I did the research after the fact, Edfund had an address I hadnt lived at in 9 years....(which I wouldnt have given them). So, I guess in summary I did default on a loan that I did owe them and since have started paying back thru the Rehab program at the DOE. I guess I wanted to see if there was anything I could do.....which It seems from your post is a NO. :(
Thanks for your help.
