credit card debt
Re: credit card debt
my 81 year old mother is receiving threatening letters from a credit card company that says they will bring her to court if she doesn't bring her credit card up to date. what started as a $6,000 bill years ago has grown over time to over $10,000 despite making attempts at paying this, sometimes not in full but at least trying. we have tried to ask for lower payments, which they would do for one month, but the next month would ask for that plus the difference. My mother lives soley on social security and does not own anything except her furniture; no car, no house, nothing. What should we do to notify the credit card company of this, so they will not harrass her. Her health is fragile, and she certainly does not need this harrassment. Thank you.
Please send a written letter to them stating that your mother will not be interested in entering into further communication with them except through mails. Once they receive your letter, they are required to stop using unfair methods.
Regarding your mother's debt, have you asked the collectors to validate the debt? They are required to produce each and every detail about the origin of the debt before you start making payment.
