Debt abroad

Hi I have lived in the U.S. since 1997 and have recently gotten letters and phone calls from a U.S. collections agency regarding some debt I have in Sweden. The debt is 10 years old and I just want to know what they can do to me here. Have no plans to ever move back. I had originally desputed the debt in Sweden but didn't get anywhere. Now they are asking for an amount that is just out of this world and I just don't know what to do.
Thanks

Hi Bocca

Welcome to the forums. Most probably, the collection agency were able to contact you regarding a debt in Sweden due to their networking system or your information revealed to them through your bank accounts or in any other way.

The US laws does not legally apply for collecting a debt originated in Sweden because the FCRA laws don't apply in Sweden. Moreover, your debt has gone beyond the reporting period and you are not legally obligated to pay this debt.

Keeping in mind that you will not be returning to Sweden, the collection agency can only bark and not bite you for collecting this debt legally; it is entirely upon you if you are interested in paying off this debt.

As a responsible citizen, I will not suggest you to leave this debt unpaid. You can negotiate for this debt and find a better alternative so that they don't create tension in your smooth life.

Hi Bocca

Welcome to debt consolidation care forums

The debts which have accrued in Sweden is not collectible in the United States. This is because a US Federal law (FCRA) does not permit this. Further your debt is also 10 years old. Hence it is a time barred debt. As per US law time barred debt cannot be collected by the creditor unless the debtor pays off the debt upon his own will.
Please do not stress yourself out.
Hope you will find this information useful

Peter
