Anyone heard of this #

I received a message from someone named Douglas. His message was not very clear and even had the nerve to say that I needed to contact him within an hour of him leaving the message. He called me at work to top it off. I do not recognize the number...877-255-2778

I got a call from that number today. A "Brooke Crabtree" left a very dubious message telling me I should have my lawyer call her because I have some 'serious' issues. I am suspicious about this because in my experience, most legitimate companies that I have had even marginal issues with fully identify themselves: "hi, this is Bob Smith. I'm calling with ABC bank about your account. Please give me a call at..." I think whatever this thing is with this number is an intimidation tactic for some kind of scam, frankly (they scare you into doing or buying whatever they say). I am also suspicious because I can't find a reference to that number online at all, except for forums like this one. I like the suggestion to call from a pay phone. Make the call. Play really dumb and ask a ton of questions.

'Itsallgoodeventually', you are soooo right on the money here with what you were saying! Its nothing but a scare tactic. They call up and leave these types of messages on your answering machine, trying to scare you, trying to make you jump through hoops for them. I've had these before. I'll admit, the first time or two, the threats shook me up but thats all they are, is threats. I've had them call and say, 'have your lawyer call us....and good luck'....or 'we've started litagations and we're going to take your house'...I've learned to ignore it. And especially if I have wrote these people letters and told them to NOT CALL, written correspondence ONLY and yet they continue to call despite my request. Then I have nothing to say to them. most of the time, I keep my fax machine on now so they can't get through or leave a message. You would think after a while they would give up, they don't. I cut my fax off and its like a feeding frenzy, from these people calling. From my understanding, once someone calls for the first time, a new collection agency that you've never heard of before, they have five days to send you something in writing. If they have called and left a message, then you should be hearing from them shortly through the mail. This recently happened to me. I received a call, never heard of the people, so I researched them, got their address and sent them a 'do not call me' letter, in the meantime, I get a letter from them letting me know what the matter is about. shirley
