credit report problems?

I just have a question for someone who knows more about this than I do. I had a gateway computer which was financed in 2000. I didn't ever pay the computer off and it ended up on my credit report as a negative item from citibank. The account says that it has been written off. Then I see another collection account on my credit report from Asset Acceptance for the same date and from citibank. Now I get a letter from a company called Credit Management Control, Inc. I just need to know when this madness is going to stop with this gateway thing. I didn't think that two or three different companies could report for the same debt, especially after it had already been written off. Should I call citibank and check? I sent a validation letter to the most recent company requesting they explain this to me. Please any suggestions would be helpful.

Jessi is right. Two collection agencies cannot report for the same account. The item is disputed and you must get it fixed by the CRA.

I believe this debt is surely out of the SOL period since you have never paid anything. Do not make a payment agreement with any company unless you are interested to pay it off and improve your credit for a while. The negative information stays in the file for a period of seven years beginning from the date of first delinquency. This item is supposed to get off from your file within a year.

Be educated while you are dealing with the collection agencies. The accounts pass to different agencies when they fail to recover the amount. Send debt validation letters through certified mail and keep everything documented for records.
