Wal-Mart may have just taken a step toward that end by applying to create what's known as an "industrial loan corporation" in Utah. The ILC would handle Wal-Mart's credit card, debit card and electronic transactions, saving the processing fees the company now pays to a third party. ILCs typically can't offer checking accounts, but they can take deposits and make loans.

I've heard some wild things about Wal-Mart's possible future endeavors. Banking, real estate, who knows what else? They've already got their hands in credit and pharmaceuticals. I've heard some crazy talk about them planning to open up apartment and condominium complexes right on top of the stores! Don't think it's true though.

There's a video out about the story of Walmart - my friend showed it in a sociology class for an absent instructor - she hasn't been back to Walmart since. It's a bad bad bad place...
Why is Walmart bad
A question.. how is Walmart any worse than any other retail company other than its size? From my experience I really don't think they are...Maybe it is the business side of me speaking.. but I really do fail to see how they are "evil", true they are huge and driven by profit.. but all business is driven by profit and they really do not do anything that other companies of its size don't.. they have just managed to do it as a retail business instead of another corporate enterprise.. perhaps we think they are evil because it is the one huge company that the average joe gets/has to deal with on a regular basis and thus we become more familiar with their practices.
Having dealt with many large companies from a business viewpoint and having dealt with Walmart on a business and personal level I really do not see much difference between them and the other MEGACORPS that all becoming increasingly common

I think I may have seen that same documentary in one of my Sociology classes! We also saw a really funny clip from The Daily Show that makes fun of Wal-Mart, and how it's taking over everything...I think they're evil, but I still shop there because I'm POOR!! Ha!

I was driving by a walmart this week in an area tht has been historically quite depressed. Before Walmart built there was an old gas station and couple of dive restuarants.. today there are several fast food places a brand new grocery store, other retail business including several local non chain ones...

Oh I wasn't broadbrushing them at all. I don't know where you all are but our Walmarts here are filthy and most of the people who work there are rude. We have a friend who's a salesman for a company who's product Walmart buys and let me tell you they have to kiss Walmart butt to first get their products in and second keep kissing to keep it in there. I'm sure that lots of other companies are the same way though.

My husband is the area Human resources manager for wal-mart in west Michigan...I'm usually embarrased to tell anyone that. He has 6 stores, and all but one of them is nasty dirty. He has been to court countless times over the last year because of employees (managers) stealing, and has dealt with numerous bogus workman's comp claims. Wal-mart is also being attacked by unions right now. I have to say, though, wal-mart treats their employees better than a lot of companies. The cashiers are paid a good deal more than other retail cashiers, and there is a lot of room for growth. Plus, the bonus program is absolutely outstanding! Just a simple store manager in a well-run wal-mart can easily make $40,0000 for his yearly bonus. Also, they are very active in a lot of charities, and contribute a lot to Relay For Life, an event that's dear to my heart, since I lost my father to cancer last year.
You are right, though Sue...most of the employees there are rude.

You're a hoot, less. I've never worked in retail, a fact my husband loves to point out to me. Wal-mart is the only job he's ever had, for 12 years. Started there at 18. when he finished college, he went into HR. But he had his share of dealing with annoying customers!
By the way..The bonus can be up to 40 THOUSAND, not 40 MILLION like I said.
