Can you help me with a better program? I am currently on a consolidation program with a debt solution company but I hate them. Since I pay $160 a month and only $90 goes toward my settlement fee. Plus they have a high amount to pay when its settled.

Hi Donna Hines

Welcome to the debt consolidation care forums.

There are certain steps which can be followed while choosing a better debt consolidation company.

  • Please make sure that you check out the different debt consolidation companies. A check on the reliability and reputation of the company should be thoroughly done. The best company should be able to provide you decent, affordable credit counseling without paying several hundred dollars a month. The top branded companies have lower fees right from the beginning and they do not charge a large fee and promise to return it upon completion of a debt consolidation program. In other words, put everything on paper and everything should be disclosed upfront.

  • Please don't hesitate in asking about the services these companies will offer beyond a debt consolidation program. The top companies offer free budgeting sessions.

  • The top branded company will be willing to spend more time with you to discuss your financial situation. They will not pressure you into taking any quick decision.

  • You can contact the Better Business Bureau to see the listing of the company. You can also enquire if the firm has had any consumer complaints. In this process, you can check with your state attorney general's office or other state consumer agencies to find out if there are any pending legal investigations.

Please consider my problem. My accounts are under a debt settlement company. They offered a low monthly installment and I could afford it at ease. But I have checked my Exp report yesterday. The accounts are not getting off. Why? Can a legitimate company do this? Where did all the payments that I sent them for last few months go? What can I do now? Please advice.

    Hi folk

    Welcome to the forums.

One of the most important things that need attention in the consolidation program is that you or your company should not miss any payments in the program. If it happens, it hurts your credit adversely.

It might be possible that your creditors plan to update the accounts once the payments are complete. Talk to your consultant and inquire about the status of the account. You should get monthly statements from your creditors as well as the consolidation company. This statement will show the complete break up of all the money deposited to your debt accounts.

I hope that everything turns well and prey for your money to be in safe place. If you find that the consolidation company has not sent money to your debt account, you can take legal actions against them.

Consult your attorney and press legal charges against this company. You can also file your complaints at the FTC, BBB and the state attorney general office. I anticipate that you will hear something good from the consultant.

Do let us know about it.

    Regards
