"Recall" account from Collection Agcy? Good idea?

I recently discovered some old medical accounts that are listed with collection agencies. These may in fact be mine; I need statements of account detailing the charges to determine this. Of course, the CAs are saying the records may be in a warehouse and could take weeks to retrieve, etc. and are trying to get me to pay them off and "get reimbursed later" if they are in error. Here's my question: Is there any point in contacting the original doctors/hospitals and asking them to recall the accounts? Hpw about asking them for a summary of the charges? I guess I really also want to determine whether interest/fees have been tacked on so I can negotiate and only pay the original amounts if insurance didn't cover them... Thanks!

Hi gamboge

It is your right to know the accuracy of your bills. You should in fact, contact the hospital and ask for the summary of your accounts. In the mean time, you should regularly ask your collection agency to validate your debt if they start harassing you. You are definitely not going to start paying over something which is verbal and which has no concrete evidence.

You should know your debts in a written statement before you actually start paying them.

Please inform us after you have made the move. Also keep us updating with your valuable suggestions and comments in the forums.

Hi gamboge,
Welcome to the forums.
Since your accounts are with collection agencies and they are saying that it is lost it is better to call up the hospital billing staffs to get the details about your bill.
Unless and until you do not know the exact billing amount how can you pay off your bills.
And lastly you have every right to know your bill details as a consumer.

All the best
Peter
