Thanks,

Name of collection agency
That was one of the things that had me concerned. The person I spoke with did not give me the name of the company she was with. She just stated that she was calling on behalf of Bahamas Marketing Group. When I asked any questions she seem to get very agitated and actually hung up on me after stating that I needed to have an attorney call her. The caller did give me her first and last name and a toll free number that I could call. Once the call was over, I checked my caller ID and the call was not from a toll free number. I called that number and it was a message center. I also called the toll free number so I could get the nam of the company and I just got a message that states: "You have reached the front desk. Please enter the extension of the party you are trying to reach." The call itself made me suspicious, but not being able to find out the company name caused me to think I needed to check into this further.

Any collector who hangs up on you is a hack. They do this for several reasons:
1) You asked questions that they could not answer with confidence and you made them nervous.
2) They are immature and poorly trained and probably get stuck in life jumping from one lousy job to the next.
3) They realize that you are not going to pay them, so they end the call and move on. Maybe they will try again later, but maybe not. Endure it, and eventually they will go away.
I personally would never pay anyone who raised their voice at me, call me names, or hang up on me. These are not the types of companies who are reporting to the credit bureaus so don't let them stress you out.
I do suggest that if you owe the money however, that you find someone pleasant at the company and pay them...on your terms.

Nice input PDL. You are right about the collector's attitude. This is so true.
PDL, would you prefer contacting the original lender if one has already got collection call for the loan? Will the original lender work on the accounts that are sent to collection?

Stanley:
I would say that depends on the company you are working with. If the customer service was good while the loan was not in collections, I would definitely try to contact the original lender. They may not be able to work with the customer directly, but they may be able to assist the customer in finding someone who will be more flexible with them. If the loan has been in collections for more than a couple of months, I would say that the original creditor probably will not be too sympathetic. After all, it is the responsibility of the customer to call as soon as they are aware the account is in collections to at least express their intent to pay at a later date. By keeping the lines of communication open, it has a positive effect on the customer's reputation. It shows that they are not deliberately trying to run from the debt, but rather that they are just having some financial difficulty at the time.
On the other hand, none of what I just said will probably work with companies like CashTodayLtd. They seem to be all around sleazy...

Jabu,
It could be someone who is working in their own in house collection department. I've found this to be true on a lot of occassions. If they worked for a legitimate CA, they would need to identify themselves and what the call was about to you.

CONCERNED DEBTOR...that is a horrible thing to say! Some of us, like me for example...was a victim of identity theft, and had financial problems due to that, therefore had to take out PDL's to help pay other bills. The cycle is deadly, but we are all here to support each other, not degrade each other.
TRUTH HURTS
Seeing the light-if you had identity theft, why did you not contact your bank and other creditors and let them know before it got out of hand? I am amazed that the pdl companies are now the bad guys but when we need their help they are the saving grace for us, doesn't make a whole lot of sense does it

BMG on collection Calls
I recieved the same threating phone calls that I would be put in jail and Federal charges brought up against me back in 2006 after i defaulted on a loan from BMG. BMG sent my loan to collection agency 1st Credit who I paid in full the loan and fees back. Then a company I think United Federal something called and started making threatening calls. I called BMG and spoke to Lindsey who cleared things up. But BEWARE after almost 3 years of this being paid I recieved a phone yesterday stating I was going to be arrested and federal charges for my 2005 BMG loan that has been paid off since 2006. I called BMG again and sent them proof of my payment. I also was able to get the so called "collection agency" on the phone with BMG. The company that supposely collecting money for BMG. The BMG rep was able to tape the conversation we had. The BMG also informed me that this company that is making these calls is supposely in trouble with the government and just keep changing their names. Just thought I would put that out if someone else is getting these calls again. BEWARE!!!!

yeah they have several and use scare tactics to get you to pay a loan that if you remember the original poster has the bank statements saying she paid them back to me it seems a scam and here are the numbers 607-428-0037 or 408-404-3021 I found the numbers that this company has given go back to two other companies one in NY and the other in CA. the first company for the 607 number is Paetec INC. and the second company for the second number is Global crossing Loacal services this one is in CA. When they were called back they were very defensive about any questions asked since my boyfriend didn't even know who this was or what this was about they just said it was about interenet fraud and that they were going to arrest him. By the time the conversation was over and done we ended up calling the attorney general who said don't pay and that they were going to check out what was going on and to let the company know that . I highly doubt that this company is a legit company since I did an internet search on the phone numbers given and they don't match the name of the company that they gave him as being BMG at all and none of the companies had to deal with payday loans that were connected to the phone numbers given to call.
BMG
Lilly863 -- thank god you wrote. I am in tears after the 1 1/2 hours I have just spend (while at work) being hung up on and threatened with arrest.
I said I would send a down payment tomorrow and could I have the Western Union acct #. They refused to give it to me until tomorrow.
They backed off when i informed them i have health problems and felt ill. I think it scared them.

Do not pay them. I made this mistake in 2006 and gave them money...more than I had because I believed the threats. Since that time I have had 2 more "different companies" call and try to get for the same thing. THe first time I sent them proof of the money grams and it stopped. This time the guy sounds Idian and he said he doesn't care what proof I have it has PROOF I didn't pay. When I asked him to send me validation he said he didn't have too. Well, I am fed up with the crap these people say about going to jail and all that SO I called a attorney who specialized in consumer rights. He called the people that are harrasing me and inturn sent me papers to file a suit against them. I'm not expecting any money because I'm sure these idiots have ways around that but hopefully it will at least stop the calls.

this makes me not want to have the Bahamas on my "wish" list for upcoming travel spots when I am finally financially independent!
Fraud
I just got the same call. He would not give me his name or phone number. He said you have the right to an attorney so when I asked for his info to forward to my attorney he said there is nothing that your attorney can do. He had a weird foreign accent. When I asked what state he was in he said texas when I asked what city he would not give me one. He became loud and irrate. He wanted me to give him money asap over the phone. He then said there is nothing your attorney can do mam. He was strange. He had all my personal info. I have fraud protection on my credit report but this goof had all my personal inform that I would not confirm.
Damn foreigners!

I too borrowed from them and when I made arrangements to pay them back they took the money from my account and continued to take 90 weekly. I then placed a stop payment with my bank and a fraud claim for any addional withdrawls from this company. Once I did this BMG contacted me once and I informed them that I had involved the authorities and they never called me again.

So I just had to call the NYPD department and my lawyer because I think this is a scam.
A Ms" williams" not only called me yesterday, but left harassing information on two of my friends' voicemails. She actually said i had committed a crime and they have to contact her immidiately if they know my whereabouts.
So I call this lovely excuse for a woman yesterday who proceeds to tell me I owe 916 dollars. Wouldn't tell me the name of the company I apparently took out the loan for AND she said she has had my case since Jan 16, 2008. She waited 9 months?
So after a lot of fighting I tell her I am not paying her a dime. She said fine, then you'll get arrested or have a court notice.
My lawyer called them and she told them I said " Fine, I guess I'll wait to get arrested then!"
This is INSANE. If i owe money, I don't' mind paying...but you better show me documentation that says I owe you money that was never paid to you!
Another thing I don't get, is that they gave me 2 company names that could be the "possible" original lender...one which happens to be a lender I currently have a loan with. The other, I've never heard of!
By the way, the number they called me on was 818-671-3000. They asked me to fax a letter saying I am okay with them debiting my account for 916 dollars. The fax number she gave me was a cell phone number in Florida!!!!!!

Hi Jez,
if you type in the name US National Bank or do a search on the phone number you will find a lot about this scam. They threaten all kinds of things, but the bottom line is that they can't do anything to you as they are illegal themselves...
Taking them to court!
So after being repeatedly harassed by BMG yesterday and today I contacted my lawyer and we're going after them. Why? Because of a little thing called the Fair Debt Collection Act! Which states:
debt collectors also may not state that:
* you will be arrested if you do not pay your debt;
*falsely imply that you have committed a crime;
1. BMG told me on the phone I was going to be arrested if I didn't pay them $916 dollars ( they refuse to send me any documentation or tell me who it is that I owe money to!)
2. They left a voice mail for a co worker of mine saying I had committed a crime and if they knew any information to please contact them. They also called a friend I had used as a reference leaving her the same message. Also saying her credit was at risk because of this.
So I called the Attorney General's Office in NYC and they told me what they did is absolutely illegal . They are sending me a form and my lawyer will be contacting them.
That is if we can find the address for the invisible Bahamas Marketing Group!
Bahama Marketing Group Scam
I got a call today while I was at work from a Natalia Williams claiming she was calling from Bahama Marketing Group, she had a heavily Indian accent. I asked who the originally company was and she said cashnet and I told her I never took a loan thru cashnet. I then asked her to fax me information regarding this and she said she couldn't do that either. The phone number she gave me was 1-800-717-1708 ext. 1006. Calling that number back no company name just to leave a message. They have been calling my friends and telling them that they will be sued over this if it is not paid.
scared
I got so scared today, I'm a college student and a guy with a heavy indian accent called me and wanted 786 on the spot. They had my old bank account number! I don't recollect every taking out a loan for 786 dollars and what a weird number that is to take out a loan anyway. This is ridiculous. Has anyone actually paid this money because i'm scared but I know that i didn't do this.

have you taken out any loans? If so, the $786.00 he is talking about is probably including interest and penalties. Now if you have never taken out any loans, it is likely that you are being scammed. Did you get a company name and/or phone number?

the company was BMG but i called all their numbers and they are all personal numbers. I don't recall ever taking any loan out through this company. I have taken federal loans out for school but that's it. I recently closedmy bank account and the guy told me it was fraud b/c i stilll owed them money and didn't pay back in 21 days.

smells like a scam to me. BMG is a payday loan company, as far as I know they're not a debt collector too. Don't pay them anything without some form of proof. This sounds like the US national bank scam, don't send them money!

yes I closed my old bank account because i didn't like the bank.
yes I closed my old bank account because i didn't like the bank. this is the account they are calling me about. I would pay if i remember what it is a owed or i had proof that i borrowed but i'm sure i didn't. I didnt even know what bmg was. And the guy was rushing through his speech and talking over me so much that i didn't even have time to ask him to send me proof. Do you think i should call him back?
No! Don't call him back, this is a known scam. US national bank
No! Don't call him back, this is a known scam. US national bank is a scam from india. They call about some debt (usually several years old or that you never had), sometimes they have personal information including SSN's account #s and other info. They're basically fishing for access to your new bank account and want to suck it dry. Don't fall for this. Read up on it, there are lots of complaints about this.

i did read up. i called him back because my friend called me and said he called them. We caught him. he told me that he was an attorney and told her he was a cop but it was the same number and same guy then he hung up. he said i took out the loan in 2006 and i'm like so why do you take two years to collect money? i said i was going to report him and he said he's filing the papers and hung up. i know this has to be a scam.
1. no documentation
2. no notification
3. 1800 number for cop? highly doubtful
4. said he was a cop and an attorney
5. what attorney hangs up on you?
6. was very aggressive and spoke over me which means he didn't want me to catch on.
7. told my friend she had to pay in order to not be brought into the situtation. why does my "reference" have to pay in order not to go to court....that's completely bogus
