Superior Asset Management and Cingular Wireless
She flat out refused to send me a letter claiming first that they don't fax or mail letters, and second that I had to have already received a letter way back last summer and would not be getting a second one.
I then pointed out that no Debt Collector in their right mind would have allowed me to leave that $16.16 balance when making my payment. I would have paid the full amount, which I was under the impression I had already done. She said "Well, I am certainly in my right mind and you owe this money. I'm not gonna sit here and fvck with you on this all day."
Then I got pissed and asked if she just swore at me and she replied "Yes I swore at your ass."
The conversaion ended there.
I am thinking these people are running a scam where they try and con people out of these small amounts thinking it will eventually add up. It doesn't make sense that she won't provide me any written verification of the account, and she refused to give me her mailing address.
Does anyone have any information on dealing with Superior Asset Management, including a mailing address? I intend to pay this as soon as they behave properly, but would prefer to do it with a cashiers check sent via certified mail.

How rude of her! I would write a letter to the directors of the company telling them you don't appreciate their employees using that language to talk to you..Especially over $16.

The fact that's it's such an odd low amount is what has me believing they are calling their customers conjuring up these small amounts. If enough people simplky don't care about $16 and pay it without question it could be highly profitable.
I just checked Bud Hibbs' site and he doesn't think too highly of these guys either.

I agree with Jessi, I would definitely write a letter and explain that a $16 debt is not worth a $1000 fdcpa violation.

I just got a letter that I called about and from this company. It sounds bogus and the letter states that you have 30 days to ask for validation of the debt - in writing. I'm doing just that(which I'll send as certified mail). They want $400.00 from me from a credit card that was paid in July 2004. They said I left a very small amount unpaid and MBNA keep trying to get their money but I never responded. They asked me if I always disregard my bills. They told me they've even contacted me by phone and mail and I agreed to pay this bill. This is the first time I've ever heard of this company! She asked what I'm trying to do by lying! They also said the same amount that was due was compounded with interest fees and late charges and that's why it's now $400. If I paid off a debt but had additional days of a finance charge, I would receive a final bill adjustment for what $2 at most?? And then figure I'm not paying the $2? This is so ridiculous! They couldn't give me any information regarding my "MBNA acct" (last exact date paid instead of just "july 2004", last exact amount paid and what was supposedly left to pay, my social security's last 4 digits only, etc). They really gave me a hard time and made me feel like scum. I have a feeling I'll be reporting them to the police and whomever else I can think of (news media?).
DON"T PAY UNTIL YOU VERIFY THIS AS A VALID DEBT!! It really sounds like a scam! Honest people panic and want to clear it up thinking it was an oversight on their part. I felt this way too but wanted to verify it before giving them money. I keep accurate records and found it hard to believe that I could have missed this. Something told me to tell them I'll check into it and get back to them. The fact that they "didn't have ANY information on the account" just didn't seem right to me. They could ONLY tell me what they wanted me to pay.

The 30 days time is to place dispute on their claim. If you dispute the debt, they have to verify it first. Otherwise they cannot collect it.

It sounds rediculous to be approached for a $16 dollar debt, but some of these companies have numerous outstanding small balances totalling millions of dollars.

SAM is a scam outfit.
Under the FCRA, they must now send you a written notice within 5 days of their intent to collect this amount (i would consider this a separate issue as you felt it was settled last year). If they do not send you the written notice (which they wont) then File suit against them for fdcpa violation. For each violation, you may sue for up to $1000. Use their own money to pay them.
