Can I deal with the creditor or have to talk to the collection agency?
At first, ask for debt
At first, ask for debt validation from them who called. If your creditor has sold the debt to this collection agency, then you'll have to deal and negotiate with them. However, before doing so, make sure the debt hasn't crossed the Statute of Limitations period. If it has crossed, then they can;t sue you to recover the unpaid amount.
You can talk with them about
You can talk with them about the debt but it is better to communicate with them in writing. Here's the debt validation letter you can use:

Send the letter via certified mail and wait for a reply in the next 30 days. Do you know the name of the collection agency?
Are you sure it is your debt?
Are you sure it is your debt? Did you check the SOL? If the SOL is not over, then ask the collectors to validate your debt first. By doing so, you will understand whether or not they are fake.
You can tell the debt
You can tell the debt collector that you can file with the FDCPA if the debt collector harasses you.
DEbt validation is must, you
DEbt validation is must, you must be sure that you owe to them. so, ask them to validate the debt first...
