My wife is in California and suffering from debt problems

My wife suffered a heart attack 6 months back. Doctors have strictly advised her to take rest. My wife is staying with our son in Kerman in California right now. She has incurred credit card debt worth $12,5478. I have not told her about this yet. She has never been good with numbers. So, I don't feel she will be able to handle this debt now. What can I do now?
