A debt collector has sued me for a time-barred debt - How to respond

A debt collector has sent me court papers for a 6 year old debt. What should I do? Should I respond or leave it?

My suggestion is you should call the debt collector and tell the person that the debt is 'statute barred'.

You can follow this formula as the debt is more than 6 years old.

A debt collector is not suing you. An attorney is. Were you actually served with a summons by process server or did you just get papers in the mail? What state are you in? What type of debt is this?

Respond to the summons with appropriate answers. You should logically defend yourself.
Secondly, if the SOL period is over, the debt is time-barred. You already know this fact now. But, you still owe the debt even if the SOL period has crossed. The debt will be there on your credit report.
