Should I pay a 3 year old medical bill?

A collection account is there in my credit report for a medical bill. This medical bill is for a 2 day stay in a hospital. The bill is worth $2000. The hospital never sent me this bill and it is over 3 years. What should I do now?

Before you repay the medical bill, there are a few steps that you need to take. For instance, check the statute of limitations period in your state. If the SOL period has expired, then you can ignore the debt because the collection agency can't sue you anymore for it. However, if you're concerned about your credit report, then you should pay it off. Once you pay off a medical bill that is in collection, it is removed from your credit report. It won't affect your credit report or score anymore. However, before making any decision, ask the collection agency to validate the medical debt first. You need to check the documents to find out if the debt is valid.

Hi Jonathon!

You should write a letter to the collection agency and the credit bureau. Tell them you have not received any medical bill 3 years ago.
So, from where the question arises of repaying a bill ‘now’ when you have not received it at all?

First of all, make sure that the medical bill is yours ad there's no mistake. It may be a mistake from the collection agency to send it to a wrong person.

Hi Jonathan! At first, make sure that the debt is yours. At time, it might happen that the collectors call a wrong person like for similarity in names, etc. So, validate your debt first. In case, the debt is yours, check the statute of limitations (sol) for medical debts in your state. If the debt has crossed the sol, you aren't legally bound to pay off anything. But if you owe the debt and it hasn't crossed the sol, you have to pay it off. For instant debt help, call 800-DEBT-913 and chat with out expert financial coach.
