This company contacted me at my place of employment, i said to send me all the infomation in the mail...I never received that letter. I was served papers saying i owe $2800. They said it was a debt from Dell computers, which I admit I do owe money to, but not for that amount. They said they'll "settle" for $2400, but I have to pay $1400 immediately and the remaining $1000 a month from now.... Can I ask for a statement from my Dell account? Did they break the law by calling my place of employment?

It depends... did they start telling your boss you owed money or were a deadbeat or something? If not then no. You can tell them next time they call at work you are not allowed to receive personal calls there and they would have to stop... if the debt sounds funky to you call up and be like, look, I am not refusing to pay or trying to be difficult, but I really would like you to send me, in writing, a breakdown of the charges owed so I can verify it with my records. If they refuse, when the dunning letter comes within 5 days (as they have made contact with you that is required) you can send an official DV letter, the info on how to write one is in my sig. Many times if you are kind and courteous like that with them they will be more than happy to send you the info without having to do an official DV.

You were served....did you answer it? Look up your court date online?

When you are served, it includes accrued interest PLUS court and legal fees. Legal fees can easily be $500-1500 depending on the court and where you live.

You can ask but your time is limited...you need to do it in writing.
Call and ask them for the breakdown...you can also call Dell and ask them for your balance.
