I was notified by my employer that a rep from Allied-Interstate had contacted them asking me to get in contact with their rep. I believe this may be over a defaulted student loan, which due to financial situations I have not been able to make payments on. Simply put....the money is not there. It has been 12 years since I signed on to the college at which I incurred that debt....can they still harrass me over this?
If it is for a federal loan, there is no SOL. It never goes away.
Calling you is hardly harrassment....you owe a debt.
FYI...they can garnish your wages without taking you to court. 15% of your disposable wages. Your balance will now have 12 years of acrued and capitalized interest PLUS collection fees of up to 24%.
My suggestion is you find a way to make payments ASAP....even if that means working a second job or they will garnish you.
All is lost
(Soaplady) If that's the case then all is lost. I lose my car and being able to support by child. Work is hard to come by...I was fortunate enough to find this PT job. No one wants a 52 year old.
Such is life I guess....

That is an excuse...why were you not paying 12 years ago?...you were only 40. And don't tell me I don't know what it is like...I am 51 and starting a new job next week. And I live in a smaller town/resort community.
You need to work harder at getting better employment. Work a second job if you have to.

No it is NOT an excuse...it is a fact. I've applied for jobs for which I was PERFECTLY matched with years of experience and got passed over. Who got the job? Someone in their 20's right out of school. I've been turned down for jobs because "I lived too far"....."was overqualified"...."did not match their criteria"...."credit" (thank to my ex).
To you all these are excuses...for me these are facts I live with. Some people call it discrimination, an unfair job market, whatever the case may be.
If you are blessed....good for you, but not everyone is capable of handling two jobs as you may be....or enjoying good health as you may be or making excuses as you call them.
I thank you for your input maam and wish you the best. :sun:

What's going to happen if you don't find a way to pay this is that they're going to take your income tax return and garnish your PT paycheck.
Get a second job at McDonald's or as a WalMart greeter. There are part time jobs out there.
There are many office jobs as well out there that are part time.
There are many office jobs as well out there that are part time. If you do not want to be doing PT jobs that an 18 year old is doing you can find jobs in the office of retail stores.
