You can co-sign for a loan even if you're in a debt consolidation program. Lenders will happily allow you to become a co-signer if your credit score is good.

Excuse me?? Debt consolidation programs tank your score, which make you a poor credit risk. Most people are in debt consolidation programs because they are over extended or have crappy credit.

To add to what soaplady said, most of the time when you're cosigning a major loan (mortgage for example) the cosigner will be asked flat out "Are you in a DMP"?
