Fix the damn spam!!!

I am sorry...I am so fed up with the spam in social misfits forum and this one. I deleted a crap load this morning, went out for a couple of hours and a shitload of unregistered "guests" have posted again. Please, please, I and the other moderators implore you, put an end to unregistered guests from posting in either of these forums. Instead of wasting time asking us for testimonials, fix the forum. No other forum allows you to post willy nilly unregistered....the screen name allows them to remain annoymous and should help us to cut down/eliminate the spammers. None of the reputable credit forums allows unregistered people to post...it is time for debt consolidation care to get with the program!!!

Back to your regular scheduled programming....

We took all possible measures to ensure that our forums remains spam free. For that, we made "registration" compulsory, inserted image verification (captcha) feature in forums, created a separate spam moderation panel (in both forums and Social Answer) where numerous spam posts are filtered everyday. Even after taking the aforementioned steps, out of the numerous spams, some manages to break through into the community. As I said earlier, there are very few options that can be used to make our forums 100% spam free. The same thing is applicable to other forums also. Since you are noticing flurry of spams coming again, we are looking for ways to resolve the issue.

I know some people want to hear the peanut gallery and some do not.

The measurements taken to stop spam here are great but could be improved.

To stop or slow spam down to a halt I would implement:

All new users must register with an email address and a password of course. Also, that email address must be valid (only accept letters, numbers and a few legit symbols such as the @, periods and dashes). One this automatically stops a lot of bots, and two this stops a lot of manual spammers (people) because they are too lazy to keep making fake email addresses.

Once the new user registers, make that new user verify their email address by sending them a verification email. They must log into their email account, open the email and click on the verification URL. Now the new user can post on the forum. With the current anti spam filters in place and a tough verification system in place....it should stop 80-90% of spam.

SL you will not find Unregistered posters in forums these days. As per new settings one 'must register' in order to post in the forums. The registration process has not been made compulsory in Social Answer section as of yet because we are still trying to get more questions in that section. As it grows we will take steps to make registration mandatory in social answer section too.

??? What the heck is the above...,we see tons of these each and everyday. Plus annonymous posters. Everyone should have to register!!!

Lack of registration in the social answers forum is nuts. People ask questions and leave and never come back because the lack of registration!!! From my observations, they never come back because they are not notified by email that there is an answer!!! Hence the mods do not bother going there or do not put the same effort into answering because we know 90% of the posters never come back. It is a waste of our time! Even if a poster comes back several days later, it is impossible to find the original post!

yes SOAPS it was moved to another forum which alarms me to no end.next there are also a few unregistered spammers like the one that got moved here as well.we have lost a few mods due to the spam, and the continuance of spam.notice how skydiver doesn't post much, and shazzers cam out and said as much.she is not on because of it,and skydiver i fear has also had enough.there has to be something that can be done to curtail this.it only is a matter of time before we get another nice wave where there's 500 or more.last thing and i know you and vikas want to be all things to all people, but it just can't be done in this case.

Yup...we have lost valuable mods who are posting on the other forums on a regular basis. Those other sites have tons of traffic and repeat posters and I will bet the owners/admins are making a ton of cash on advertising/clicks. I never see any spam on those forums and the mods and admins remove junk postings and spam advertisers. We used to have more activity but social answers and posters who didnt know their shit watered down our credibility. People will post on social answers unregistered, then post again on the other forums where they get have to register...they get answers and return. They never return to social answers. Lost business and traffic. Next time they have a question, they wont even think of coming here.

in fact i remember it like it was yesterday, but the memorial day rant thread.the one where i came on for 45 min,and spent just about all of it deleting over 600 garbage spams.again you can't be all things to all people.when this place was at it's apex there wasn't this problem.i don't believe there's nothing you can do.you just don't want to ruffle any feathers, but then the essence of this site gets lost.JMO.

If you post under normal procedure i.e posting without registering, you will not be able to post replies or create new threads in the forums. It seems that the forum has been hacked as a result of which we are getting those spams. Our tech team is working on it and it would help us if you cooperate and send us few more samples of those spams or active spam post urls/ links so that they can check spam pattern, IP etc for resolving the issue in forums. We are also making a provision to add spam words in Social Answer spam filter box, where one can add the most spammed words in the said box so as to avoid such words in future posts.

Dear Mods

Our community knows that you all have to spend a huge amount of time for moderation. Keeping that in consideration, we???ll soon be coming out with a points system for moderating posts. We appreciate your effort to make the forums and Social Answers spam free, and want to reward you all.

We will let you know once it is implemented. We hope that you???ll co-operate with us.

Jason

well for one this thread was moved to the debt consolidation forum(don't ask me how,or who)i moved it back here.now my beef is with the amount of stuff only we mods see.was that unregistered moved like that or was there the icon at the bottom meaning only we can see it.i personally haven't seen any junk spam that the others have seen,or can see.the issue i had was deleting alot of junk so i can get to the posts.deleting junk is part of our function, and if they are gonna come up with a way to reward that function.so much the better.

I don't understand how you're saying you can't post if you don't register..

Try posting without registering in forums and check if you are able to make unregistered posts. You will know what I'm trying to say here :) (OG, under normal procedure our system will not allow you to post)
Our forum has been hacked as a result you are getting those 'Unregistered' spams. We are trying to find out ways to sort out the issue and so we are requesting you to send few of those spam post/urls in this thread which will help our tech team.
