Being that you collected on student loans maybe you could help me on my matter. I received a call yesterday at my new job of a month from collector at CTI threathning to have my wages garnished if I didn't enter into one of their 9 month payment plans to get the account in good standing. Is this legit? My mother doesn't even have my work number yet? I was going to call the Dept. of Edu to set up a plan as soon as I got my feet under me after being out of work for 2 years.

Did you read the student loan forum? The sticky notes? What they are telling you is quite true.

One question....were you "involuntarily" seperated from your last job? Were you fired or laid off? If so, you cannot be garnished for one full year.

Yes, I was layed off back in 2009 and was out of work for over a year. I decided to go along with one of their payment options. Like I said... it was the fact that I received the phone call out of the blue a month after starting a new job, on my office phone. It just seemed so suspect due to the fact that they tracked me down so quickly. In any event, I'm paying with the first payment coming out on the 27th of this month.
