student's credit card debt

Hi, I am 23 years old and a 4th year in college. I have about 12000 in debt in three different credit cards that i mostly accumulated while trying to pay through college and also during a period when i was unemployed. I do not want to default on them but i am having a hard time keeping up with the payments especially now that i do not have a job and i am only receiving financial aid and federal student loans which are not enough. I am looking for means in which i could consolidate them and defer payment until when i am done with college and i have a job. Is that possible or what would be my best option. Thank you.

Mike, you can consolidate your debts, so that you can make a single monthly payment instead of three payments separately on the three cards. You can do that by transferring the balances from high interest ones to a low interest one. If this does not seem a viable option, you can join a debt consolidation company to help you in consolidating your debts. For consolidation companies you can refer http://www.debtconsolidationcare.com/ranking-chart/ .

Another thing that you can consider is getting a part time job. This can help you to deal with your debt problem :)

Mike, I'ld suggest you to consolidate your debts on your own since you don't have a job as of now. But first, you’ve to seriously consider getting a job, a part-time one for now. Surf the internet and get some online jobs where you can work at your convenient time. These online companies pay well but check their testimonial and payment pages before joining.

You should also try some budgeting. $12,000 debt in 4 years of college is a huge amount. Try to cut down on your spending and save more. Try to use your cards as less as possible. Cut down on your luxuries and use the money you save from this to pay off your debts.

Regarding consolidating your debts, as SC has written, transfer the balances from high interest cards to a lower one. Then, try to pay them off.
