Another Newbie

I am new to the boards, but not new to messy credit (lol). In all honesty, husband and I are finally at the point where we can begin to dig out of the mess that 3 pregnancies of bedrest helped create. No more babies for us  Most of our credit issues began when I lost my job in '02 due to bedrest with baby #2-went from making $60,000 in '01 to less than $20,000 in '02. I was off work for 7 months and everything went nuts. After being told that we couldn't have any more children #3 and #4 soon followed-so much for medical expertise. Hubby got a much better job in 2008 and I am full time mom of 4, work full time and a full time student. I know that once I get out of school I will facing student loan repayment, which will be possible.
Right now we want to repair our credit, make right by our debts and get on track to living debt free.
We have pulled our 3 credit reports-so far the tally for both of us is 18 negatives (mostly medical bills, two old credit cards, and a few old pd loans) and 12 positive accounts. I have begun sending out debt validation letters and disputed some of the listings on our reports. So far I have had 4 removals from experian, and lots of updates...
I will be here as often as I can, as I really think that I can learn a lot from ya'll here and can take what I have learned and actually apply it.
Thanks
Chrissy :rose:

Hi Chrissy,
If you wish to take care of your debt, try opting for self negotiation with the creditors before you decide to take professional help. Sending debt validation letter was a good move which has definitely helped you to remove the disputed ones.
Prepare a check list and note regular monthly expenses like gas, electricity, water and car payments. Mortgage payments can also be included. Just remember no matter what happens, these payments should be made on a timely manner to keep yourself in good standing as far as balancing your credit score is concerned.
Try to make contact with your creditors and check with them for a possible payment plan to pay off your debts. If it doesn't work out then you can look for professional help. Unlike you there are many who find themselves in similar situation and the best part is people here are always there to give you honest advice to pay off your debts in a legitimate way.
I hope I was able to assist you in someway.

Thanks for your responses. This is a long road isn't it??? But I guess that it took me a while to make a mess of my credit also, so I am trying not to get impatient. I am almost 21 days out since I sent my validation letters and getting in some half a##ed responses from some of the agencies. One company apparently couldn't verify anything and I got a call today from another agency saying they had just purchased the debt as of July 16th....tricky folks.
Anyway, it is nice knowing that there are people out there who understand what we are fighting and the support is great.
Thanks for the advise on budgeting-I am learning really fast where we waste money. Last month we kept a very detailed log of where money went and we realized that my husband (who works an hour away and spends 10-12 hours on a train) was spending about $300 a month on food!!! :D We quickly invested in a carry cooler and sandwich fixins-a savings of over $200 a month. We have cut our satelite down to the basics-4 kids and living in the country with no neighbors-disney is a lifesaver, kwim? We are also re learning how to coupon and no more impulse buys...
See you soon!
Chrissy
