I have an unsubsidized loan that is Private through sallie mae, and after reading this post i double checked with them and sure enough it is private.

unsubsidized has to do with interest, not the type of loan at all.

They are called stafford loans...subsidized and unsubsidized. This is a term only used by federal loans.
