Defaulted but not my fault. Why can't someone offer some help?
Long story here but will try to summarize.
I consolidated my student loans in the fall of '07. I am a single mother of a 17yo son who has heart disease, and my mother is mentally and physically disabled and has only me to care for her. I work way too many hours trying to make ends meet for us all and provide to the best of my ability.
Now...last fall, I get a call from a CA who demands 12,000.00 that day on loans that were in fact not consolidated but in default. I called dept of ed and I'm told that some loans were consolidated but others weren't. That they had received the check to consolidate them but, they were in "cyber space" going from one department to another and the check gets sent back. She said no problem and that I would just redo the paper work and the other loans would be consolidated. I did everything as told. Then called and they said it would all be done within 45 days. Ok, thank God. But, not quite so fast. Now my tax return has been taken as offset on defaulted student loans. Call again. No...the last consolidation was canceled due to you not returning signed papers to us. NOW WHAT? I need my tax refund, I'm going to lose my car, my bills are all behind. What can I do? I am now applying AGAIN for consolidation of those loans that were not done the first time. Someone help.
