What does it cost to be plugged in?
So, how much do your appliances and electronics add to your energy bill? Here are some average monthly costs, based on (my county's) rate of 8.1 cents per killowatt hour:
Clothes washer: $1.62
Clothes dryer: $11.34
Coffee Maker: $2.43
DVD Player: $.06
27" Television: $6.06
15 cubic foot freezer: $11.40
Computer: $2.59
Refrigerator/Freezer: $9.72
(end of article)
Now I know we can't unplug our freezer/ fridge, etc, but everything else can be. And line dry your clothes, hang them over chairs, hang them on hangers in the bathroom etc. Even if they don't get completely dry, you can finish them up for 5-10 minutes in the dryer which, when you compare it to 1 hour, is a hug difference.
And look at the TV! I never realized it cost that much to have it turned on! I guess "free TV" really isn't free!

I believe that the rates posted were "running" rates, not just the plugged in and turned off rates. I do know that there is a difference.

i am lucky that i do not pay for heat where i rent. it is not controlled by each apartment so therefore we cannot pay. i know it's expensive, though - but i must admit, i'm not one to run the heater much. i guess i got that from going up with thrifty parents!

i have recently cut my bill in half by doing the following:
1. i slowly switched all my bulbs to energy efficient one at a time because they are so costly but i havent had to replace any in a year which is alot better than the old bulbs.
2. hang my clothes to dry.
3. believe it or not i save using my dishwasher instead of hand washing it uses less water.
4. now i know most of you dont have this option but i replaced my heating system to a outdoor furnace water heater that i bypassed the hotwater tank. This made a huge differance. Now i hear that you can buy a timer at lowes that will regulate when it heats say you do all your showers and laundry in the morning set it to kick on at 5 am before you get up so it heats up and set it to shut off at say 9 am while you are at work. some of these timers you can double set it so it kicks on again say at 7 pm to 9 pm my grandparents swear by them. your hot water heater uses alot of electricity throught the day.

my next home improvement purchase is going to be one of those "On Demand" water heaters ... they cost 2 to 3 times what a standard water heater does to buy, but the monthly cost is less than 1/4. Estimates are that you pay for the difference in the units in the first year based on average consumption.

Yeah, I realized this a while ago. Now I'm driving my husband crazy b/c I keep yelling at him about the electricity. I even unplugged all our little kitchen applicances. He got so mad at my one day because he had put some bagel bites in the toaster oven. 20 min later, he realized that he had forgot about them, but when he ran out to the kitchen, they hadn't even cooked b/c I had unplugged the toaster oven. I laughed at him when he told me that story. Also, I got so mad at his waste of electricity one day, that before I left for work, I took out every lightbulb in the house! It was hysterical.
