Can the Dept of ED do MATH????

IT’S CRAZY!!! I’ve paid dept of ED over $18,000.00 back in student loans for 13 years straight of a $11,400.00 loan, and they say I still owe over $8,000.00… how is that possible. I ran their own Dept of ED calculator that bares out my numbers that I would have paid it off in just over 13 years, but they won’t listen to me, they keep telling me that I must have had some collection cost or something. But I was never in collection, I set it a garnishment with my job to take out over $110.00 a month and the last two years I was paying over $166.00 a month which would have basically paid off the $11,400.00 dept. By their own calculator it showed I would have needed to pay just over $18,400.00 and I don’t know what they are talking about, CAN ANY ONE HELP OR HAVE ANY SUGGESTION????? thanks

Contacting a state AG for federal student loans is a worthless step...they won't get involved in most cases. They will simply refer you to the Student Loan Ombudsman's office which is set up to handle complaints.

Have you asked for a payment history from your lender?? Who are you making your payment to....they may give me more information right there! Do you know what type of loans you borrowed?? Subsidized loans do not start accruing interest until you are in repayment, whereas unsub loans start accruing interest the day they are dispersed. Depending on the dates that you borrowed, you could have a fix interest rate or variable. Did you take deferments/forebearances?? You might have capialized inerest in there too.

Garnishment. Is your employer simply doing a payroll deduction or are you formally being garnished?? If you are formally being garnishmed by your lender, that would indicate default.
