End of My Rope

We are screwed again! Got a call that my mother-in-law is going in for heart surgery tomorrow. Just drained our account (in fact put it in the red) to get my husband a ticket and some extra cash to go be with her. Have checks out against the money. I know I am going to get several NSF fees and know that these checks are going to be returned. I do get paid Friday, but it isn't very much and definitly not enough to cover these checks. One is the house payment and one is my utility payment, and there are a few misc checks, grocery, persciptions, etc. Do not know what I am going to do. My husband is going to be gone for a couple of weeks, he has no vacation left and that means no paycheck from him. I do not know what I am going to do!! I have already called my folks and they do not have the money to lend me because they had bought a plane ticket for my son to fly out to visit them and it is nonrefundable and know we cannot get a loan due to our credit. We were starting to make a little headway and now this. I feel like I take 2 steps forward and 5 steps back! What am I going to do???? I am already paying back a loan that we had to take out from my company a year ago. It is almost paid off, but I cannot get another on until it is PIF. I am just at the end of my rope right now. I know the mortgage company will not send the checks through a second time. The utilty company might and not sure which of the others will, but the I have all the fees! Right now I feel like just giving up and letting everything go and live on the street! This totally stinks. I know this isn't his mom's fault and if it were my mom, I would want to be there too, but this is just a bad time right now. I am not going to do it, but the thought did cross my mind on one of those bad loans, but won't do it. What am I going to do? Don't want to screw things up again after starting to make some headway. I did call the mortgage company and the utility company and there is really nothing they can do for me and not sure when which other ones will be returned. UGH!!!!

I'm so sorry, I know the feeling, believe me.

Do you have any credit cards that you can maybe take an advance on? How about a good friend, that might lend you the $ for a bit?

Did you try maybe a loan with Citifinancial or American General Finance? (they usually lend to people with not so great credit, but they denied me!)

We have one credit card, and it is barely under the limit due to having to buy car gas. I am 100% sure that Citifinancial or AGF will not lend to us considering that about 3 years ago, they were included on our bankruptcy. To be honest, we only have a few close friends, and they are pretty much in the same boats as we are as far as living paycheck to paycheck and know they do not have the extra money. One of them I am helping them get out of the payday loan trap themselves. We have a lot of accquaintences (I know I spelled that wrong),which are mostly people we work with, but not anyone we would borrow from.

Thanks for the suggestions though.

2NBand
I am so sorry to hear this. I too am going thru a bad time, but certainly not as bad as what you are facing.
I know you have a loan out with your company, but perhaps if you explain the situation they will advance you a bit more. After all, they know you will repay because you work there.
Also, maybe if you call your bank, as a one time courtesy they will pay the checks as they come in, or at the very least reverse the nfs charges. Its worth a try.
as you said its not your mother in laws fault, but these things always seem to pop up at the worst times
I just remebered, I once bought a non refundable air line ticket and due to an illness I could not use it. I did call the airline and explained the situation. They did give me a refund less $50.00. Again its worth a try. Have your parents call the airline and see if they will help with the ticket
Please keep us posted, and let us know how you are

My company has very strict policies regarding loans. If it were a death, then that would be a different matter. I had already talked to my mom about this and she had talked to the airline after I called her and before I posted. They will not do it. The only thing she can do is change the flight dates, for a fee.

Just called the bank and they will not do it. If we had one of their credit cards or the money to cover things in our savings account, they would have considered the NSF fees, but since we don't have either, nope! Thanks for the suggestions kashzan. They were good ideas.

This may not be a solution but it was for me and my wife when we were in a really bad situation. Gold and silver are at an all time high right now. Gold is at 675.00 an ounce or there about. If you have any old jewelry that is meaningless to you, you would be surprised what a good buyer will pay for it or what a pawn broker will loan you against it. A good buyer will pay 80 to 85% of the current price. An old high school ring will bring around 200.00 right now for example. It is worth thinking about!

I am so sorry to hear about all your troubles 2nBand :( Hang in there- you are in my thoughts and prayers..Have you asked your mortgage company if they can maybe let you pay on the interest, and add your prinicipal on later? Also, check into your local helping agencies, and see if they can help with utility, meds, etc. My sons girlfriend had to go to the ER, and couldn't fill her prescription, and a local helping agency and pharmacy filled it for her. Good Luck- you're in my prayers..KAren :D

I do have an old class ring, but it is only 10K gold, not sure what it would bring. Might check into that.

Bossy, had already thought about that, but since we had been late, etc, they won't do that. As far at the other things go, technically we make too much money. I will just keep plugging away and see what I can come up with.

I completely understand your point, 2nband...I am in the same boat. Aid agencies look at the gross income...if I brought home my gross income, I wouldn't need help in the first place. But because of my Ch. 13 payments coming out of my check, taxes, insurance...I currently take home roughly 1/3 of my gross.

There is a website Modestneeds.org..... they have emergency grants for situations as this....a plane ticket for your hubby. I looked at them the other day for my Mom, they supposedly help people that do not qualify for aid due to income. I know it is legit, but I don't know how fast they get you the money - it might be worth a shot to check it out. My hubby made some extra cash by taking in some old brass & copper to the recycler....another thought if you have metal junk around. Much luck & prayers

Thanks dalfire...loved the quote. I did look at prosper.com but they do not do consumer loans in NC. They do business loans but not consumer. Sucks considering that I was told that I could try to get one, until I got toward the end and found this out. Oh well...we will just keep looking

I know what you mean about gross income. When I lost my job and health insurance, I tried to get some pres. help from the drug manufatures, and was told we made too much money!! I said to her"Well, if we make so much money, how come I can't afford my meds?" She just sat there stunned  Karen Although,on one of them, I actually go my heart meds, and didn't cost a thing!!

Years ago when I had only been a single mom for about 2 years...and without ay child support yet...I had a really rough time...I had gotten behind in just about everything...I lived in a fairly big city at the time and called everywhere trying to get some help, but because I made like $500. more than the limits I couldn't get any help at all...one person actually told me to quit my job and go on welfare and then they could pay for everything!!!! All I need was help to get through a month or so...unbelieveable...I ended up talking my mom into babysitting and took a second job...

It is tough, I tell you. I know when I was a single parent and was trying to get WIC, I made like $10 or $15 too much a month to qualify! That was just crazy, but what can you do.

Did get my husband off this morning. My mother-in-law has her surgery tomorrow. My husband is going to miss our son's swearing into the AF on Monday, but not much we can do right now. He needs to be with his mom. We didn't even know she was having heart problems! She never said a word when she was out here for our son's graduation. If we had known, maybe we would have been a little better prepared.

I called Red Cross and Salvation Army this morning and neither of them have any funds to help because they have been putting their funds out for the elderly with this heat wave that we are having (triple digits and the heat index is like 10 to 15 degrees higher than what the temperature actually is). Even talked to them at my husband's work, but they can't do anything either. They do not give advances on pay or employee loans.

I do want to tell those that have donated points to me how very much I appreciate it. God bless you guys. It has brought tears to my eyes. Thank you from the bottom of my heart!!!!!

OK, just a quick update....my mother-in-law had her surgery, but looks like she may need to have more. I don't remember everything my husband said they were having to do, but they could not finish what needed to be done because she was not tolerating things well while under. That won't happen until toward the middle or end of the week, so looks like he is going to be gone a little longer than he thought! UHG! Plus I am ticked off because his older sister did not postpone her wedding, which was yesterday, due to her mother's surgery and not being able to be there. Then had the nerve to give my husband crap for saying he wasn't going to come so he could stay at the hospital.

To guest ~ as I had stated earlier, cannot borrow any more from 401K. Already have a loan and cannot have any more out. As far as churches go, not a member of any church around here, so kind of hard to ask there. Being Catholic, where we are at there seems to be nothing but Baptist churches and the nearest Catholic church is quite a ways away.

I am continuing to try to see what I can find. Already had 3 checks returned and now I have to get the utilites paid so I don't get cut off. Even though the utility company said they would split things up for us, I still got to get a first payment in by Tuesday and then another one next Friday. Also have to get a hold of my car insurance company and see about splitting my car insurance since it is over $300 since we added my son onto it. Left a message for the people that we have the car financed through, but now I am afraid that I am going to be bombarded all at once with promised payments I am not going to be able to make! I tell you, when it rains it pours!

2nband I know to well the feeling of 2 steps forward and 5 steps back. Sorry about your mother-in-law. Did you check with you utilities about some kind of payment arrangements? Also check with state housing dept. they should have some help for you there. I am surprised your mortgage company is not willing to work with you. you think they would have you making some kind of payment then be or go into default.
