Ive been stuggling with debts and now considering bankruptcy

I'm going through a financal hardship with an unsecured debt of $24,000 and some medical bills ( not really sure of the amount) do to an illness I've been stuggling with and now considering bankrucpy. I'm afraid to file for it b/c of the horrid stories I've heard. Since I've been sick, I haven't been able to work. If I file for bankrupcy, and I eventually got better to work, wouldn't it be hard for me to get a job? Is anybody doing okay out there who has filed for bankrupcy and living a "normal" life? I need advice on what to do

We filed bankruptcy a few years back. I think as far as it affecting you getting a job, I think it depends on the type of job you are applying for. If it is a job where you handle money, they might frown on it. Just be honest when you go in for a job and they are going to pull a credit report. I think being upfront will carry a little more weight then not. My husband and I are leading a "normal" life, as you call it. We are still fighting to get out of debt due to my illness and surgery last year, but are slowly making progress. Have some faith and it will be ok. Sometimes we have to do what we have to do to live, even if it is something we really don't want to do, like filing bankruptcy. I know we hated the idea of doing it and tried to do everything we could not to have to file, but it got to the point to where we did not have any choice, per say. It might be a bit of a stuggle afterward, but it will get better.

There are a lot of people that lead normal lives after bankruptcy, just as 2ndband said.

Bankruptcy is something that can affect many aspects of your life. You will want to be sure it is the right decision for you. Sometimes it is the best choice.

I agree with 2ndband that honesty is the best policy when an employer runs your credit. If you tell them upfront, explain why things happened that way, they will be much more likely to hire you then if you didn't say anything. For an employer to run a credit check, they have to inform you first and get your permission.

Bankruptcy is a major decision, and it affects your life in many ways. However, a "normal" life is entirely possible both during and afterwards. It just takes some adjustment on your part, and a lot of the adjustment is financial.

It's not an easy decision to make, but sometimes it's the only thing you can do. I highly recommend consulting a bankruptcy attorney before you make any moves. They will be able to tell you which Chapter of bankruptcy you qualify for and what effect it will have on your finances, your credit report and your financial future. Make a list of your questions before you sit down with the attorney - it will help.

Thanks for the reply.
You filed bankrupcy a couple of years ago and your still fighting to to get out of debt? I don't understand. I need to research more about bankrupcy and the process of it. I'm sure it's not easy, but I didn't think you still would be fighting over it after a few years has past. Is $24,000 worth filing bankrucpy for?

That all depends on your situation. If you make like $150,000 a year, then no, it's probably not worth it. But there are a lot of factors that decide if it's worth it or not. Talking to a BK attorney is really a good idea. They can tell you what all the choices are. Most bk attorneys do a free consultation too.

If you are referring to me struggling...yes due to me getting ill this past year and then I had to have major surgery and was out of work for a while and this all happened right after we bought our house. We got caught in the payday loan trap and that caused us more problems, between medical expenses, medicines, the mortgage, car payment, kids in school and in band, etc. The payday loans really caused havic on top of me not getting a paycheck for a few months and also my husband's hours were cut a bit, which hurt our paycheck. We were starting to have a little breathing room, and then boom, life throws a wammy at you. Now we are getting out of the payday loan trap and are working to get ourselves back on track. I had my surgery a year ago this coming June, but got really sick before that.
