Changing address

Unusual situation perhaps, but I have student loans from graduate school. I currently live with my mother which is where the bills are sent to, but Im moving abroad soon.

I have no intention of paying these bills once I move. Even now I tell my mother not to pay them but she refuses and pays anyway.

The only way to get her to stop paying these bills is to have the bills sent somewhere else. Its not right that she should have to pay my bills (though of course she insists).

Would it be wise to have these bills sent to my new address overseas? I don't want any harassing but I figure they could find out my new phone number and start calling. Would a cease and desist letter actually solve any of this? I'd rather get harassing phone calls and threatening letters than have my mother continue to waste her money, but ideally I'd rather have none of that happen.

Thanks. Im the original poster. Yes, I was afraid that they would go back to the old address after not hearing anything from the new address. Maybe if I make just one payment from the new address they'll stop. And I should get my name off of my mother's checking account too. I guess its considered a joint account. I doubt they would care who's name is on the check, though. So that might be a waste of time.

I had a year forbearrance, but I dont want to do that again. I don't wany to send another penny for this loan for reasons I wont get into.

Im not sure what Ben is saying. They would be unable to contact me outside of the US? That's not what I've heard. I gather that they're unable to collect or...take money from my wages or anything, but they would still be able to call and send letters. To be honest, the main reason Im leaving the country is to get away from this debt.

That is what I meant to say in my post. They will not stop calling you, but they will be unable to collect money from you.

However, there are some agencies that have a wide network and branches operating abroad and they gather information from the bank accounts. So, you need to think from this end too.

I got a PO box once I moved and had loans harassing me.
I have not and will not give my new address out to anyone that does NOT absolutely NEED it. I was wary to even give it to my employer!
The PO box has been working well...if anyone tells you that they MUST have a street address to send their mail to, that's b.s. A PO box is sufficient.
