injapankitty - welcome to the forums!
Are you a Japanese citizen, or an American in Japan? The reason I ask is that we have a number of consultants that perform debt consolidation and settlement, and they might be able to help you with your situation, but I am unsure if they will call you in Japan. If you are an American citizen in Japan, and you have family back here in the states, your family might be able to help you find some help.
I am unfamiliar with the laws of Japan as they relate to debt and settlement or consolidation of debt. However, I'm sure someone else on the site will see your post and respond with more helpful information!

Thank you for your response. I am an American living and teaching in Japan. I will be here for one more year. Is it possible to ask for a settlement of a student loan? The amount of my student loans are rather significant, which is why I came to Japan. I get paid more for teaching than I can in America, and I needed to start making payments. I am not in default. I have applied for loan forgiveness for a part of my loans, but I do not qualify, despite my teaching in low-income schools and doing missionary work for three years. I am not trying to get out of paying a loan I am responsible for, but I honestly do not see how I can pay this off in my lifetime. I do not want to work the rest of my life paying on a student loan, which the government refuses to help me with. I would appreciate any assistance of information you might offer.
The amount of my loans are approximately $63,000.00.
Thank you,
Sincerely,
Kathy Cote

Here are the rules for student loan forgiveness for teachers. It looks like you have to have taught in a designated low income school for 5 consequitive years. Missionary work to my knowledge does not qualify.

You cannot "settle" a student loan that is not in default. Lenders/servicers are guaranteed 100% of the funds due and would not be willing to take a loss. You can settle when you are in default, but usually all they will settle on is the collection fees which are around 20% so effectively you still owe the same amount of money.
Are you paying on your loans now???
