I have an appointment with a BK attorney tomorrow, and a little while ago I received a reminder phone call from the receptionist. When she told me her name, I was completely speechless, since I recognized her name as someone from my church! I hung up the phone and was thinking that maybe it was someone else with the same name. However, after doing some checking, I found that the attorney is also a member of my church (but attends at a different congregation time so I don't know her), making me pretty sure that the receptionist is the person I know.

I've known this gal since she was a child, I've taught her in church classes, I know her entire family, her mother is one of my best friends (so you'd think that I would have known where her daughter worked!), we have dozens of mutual friends, etc. It definitely is not the law firm that I would have chosen if I had known!

But, alas! Since the appointment is already made and confirmed, and obviously the receptionist knows who I am, it didn't seem worth looking for another attorney at this point. So I took a deep breath, called her back, told her that this is obviously embarrassing, and that I obviously don't want other people knowing my situation. She assured me that the attorney/client confidentiality applies to everyone in the office and that I don't need to worry.

Just another example of the bad luck that seems to follow us in anything related to finances! Of all the attorneys in the phone book and all of them that I called to pre-screen, I had to pick that one!

Honestly I do not understand why filing for BK is such an embarrassing thing for so many people. So you had a rough go of it, you got in over your head, had a string of bad luck and you need some help getting out from under this black cloud sitting over your head. Perhaps you made some poor decisions (like I did) perhaps your spouce made the poor decisions or perhaps you lost a job and you couldn't afford the life you once could...whatever it is, you had a string of bad luck and you are being given a chance to start over. Why is that so humiliating? Everyone needs a little help sometimes and it's not like you're going to a lawyer because you killed someone or you ran over the neighbors dog on purpose....now THAT would be an embarrassing situation and I could see being humiliated to have to face someone who goes to your church but BK?? Nah, you're just a person in a bad way who needs someone to help you out. Nothing bad about that at all!

Alias, they have to stick to the confidentiality agreement, or they will be in big trouble.

In my job, I have that too. If someone calls and asks if so-and-so is a client,or a wife calls to speak to her hubby while he is in my office, I can't tell them they are there. The only way for me to do that is if they give permission to speak to someone, like their parole officer or judge, family member, etc.

It would be like a DR. going around town talking about his patients. So don't worry, they should keep it under wraps, if not, they are in trouble..karen :D
