steps on starting a bankruptcy

my bf is goin to file for bankruptcy. i wanted to get some informations on how he should start. he's kinda worried at same time because i told him about someone on this website getting dismissed, instead of being discharged. his bills are about 30,000 he told me can file for bankruptcy but i will be helping him pay the fees and everything with my income tax. i just wanna make sure that the money wont be wasted. i will be supporting him with his filing with bankruptcy but we wanna make sure the money we be paying the attorney and all would be worth it. we dont wanna be paying 1,500 and then he just get dismissed.
what are the first steps he should do?? he found some attorneys who can help him. i check on them for some reviews we found one that is really good and doesnt charge him alot.
i wanna know what should he do first?? should he call his creditors and pdl companies to check how much he owes them? what is the process when filing for bankruptcy? how long does it usually takes? what will happen bankruptcy is approved or discharged???? i wanna know these so i can tell him. cause we both never filed for bankruptcy but this time he finally made his decision he will file for it. pls hep. thanks in advance.
