Does debt consolidation mean that I hire a company to pay off the debts?

I know that this all seems common sense to most of you, but I have a few questions. 1. Does debt consolidation mean that I hire a company to pay off the debts I have, and then I make monthly payments to just one place? Or do I still make separate payments to separate places? 2. Are student loans eligible? 3. How much money in debt makes for a good candidate of debt consolidation? 4. Who are the recipients for the debt samaritans club? Thank you for your help! I am so new to this!

Am I understanding the information exchanged here~ that no matter if the debt has gone to a collection agency and they are the ones contacting me now, that i can still call the creditor and work out a settlement directly?

Should I consolidate my debts

:) I just recently have been considering debt consolidation but don't know if it's for me. I can't believe how much debt i've racked up in just the past 5 or 6 years (I'm only 27). I've got a job, house (house is what did it i'm afraid, really hurt the wallet), 2 cars, etc. etc. My wife and I were just about breaking even for the past couple of years since buying the house, but she recently went back to college and the burden fell on my lap for the most part.

Debt settlement company

Two years ago I signed up with a debt settlement company. They agreed to take $200 a month from me to accumulate an account of which they could use to settle with my debtors. I have over $3,000.00 in my account and they have only settled one small account of mine. The debts keep getting referred to new collection companies and my credit score is horrible. Every company that calls me wants to settle with me and says that the Debt Settlement Company never returns their phone calls. Is it too late to sign up for debt management at this point?

Chapter 7 vs. consolidation

I have about $40,000 in credit card debt with no assets. I always make my minimum payments, but I'm making no dent in the balances, and almost all of my income goes to pay these minimum payments. Would it be better for me to file ch. 7 and start all over again, or should I consider consolidation? Please help!

Discover Card Rudeness

I just joined the forum, and I wondered if anyone else had a problem quite like mine. You see, I have been in the process of getting divorced for nearly two eyars now, and i really can't afford a lawyer or anything to expedite the process, thanks to my low income and too high for comfort debt. You see, while we were married, I paid all off the essential bills (housing, utilities, food), while my ex paid the phone bill (including cell and DSL for his computer) and gas for his car.
